In the 11th century, traders and craftsmen sought shelter from bad weather in the Hamburg Mariendom. After the church was demolished in the early 19th century, the showmen finally found a permanent place for their markets in 1893. Since then, the Dom has developed into one of the most significant folk festivals in Germany.
On the approximately 160,000 square meters of festival grounds, over 260 showmen and numerous catering businesses present their attractions. The range includes classic carousels and giant wheels as well as modern high-tech rides. Especially popular are the regular fireworks, which illuminate the sky every Friday at 10:30 PM during the Dom.
A special highlight is the Family Day, which takes place every Wednesday. On this day, many rides and stands offer reduced prices, making the Dom particularly attractive for families. Additionally, special themed events on the approximately 2,500 square meter event area provide extra entertainment.
Insider tip: If you want to experience the Dom in a somewhat quieter atmosphere, it is advisable to visit right at the beginning of opening hours or on less busy weekdays. This way, you can enjoy the attractions without long wait times.
